Admission Requirements

American Canadian School of Medicine (ACSOM) admission requirements are similar to medical schools in the U.S. and Canada, per Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) guidelines. The Admissions Committee evaluates applicants in a comprehensive manner to consider not only GPA and test scores, but also motivation, maturity, volunteer service, leadership ability, and knowledge of the medical field. This well-rounded evaluation ensures prospective students have the ability to excel at ACSOM.

Decision

The Faculty Admissions Committee holistically reviews each qualified application and makes all admissions decisions. An applicant can expect a response from the committee within 30 days of the interview.

Prerequisites

Bachelor’s
Degree

Bachelor’s degree is required. No requirement for a major as long as the required courses listed below have been taken.

Course Requirements

One year of biology consisting of general biology or higher (example of higher level biology includes a course in anatomy, physiology, combined anatomy and physiology, microbiology, genetics, molecular biology, etc.)

 

Two semesters of general chemistry

One semester of organic chemistry

One semester of algebra or biostatistics

One semester of physics

MCAT

The MCAT is required as part of your application to ACSOM. Please submit scores from all attempts. The faculty admissions committee evaluates all applicants holistically and your MCAT score(s) is one component of your overall candidacy for medical school.

 

(Note: The Faculty Admissions Committee will consider an MCAT waiver for healthcare professionals with extensive experience on a case-by-case basis.)

Fluency
In English

Fluency in English is fundamental to thriving in our academic community. Prospective students are expected to demonstrate a strong command of the English language, ensuring they can actively participate in discussions, comprehend complex texts, and articulate ideas effectively.

Record Of
Good Conduct

At our university, we prioritize fostering a safe and conducive learning environment for all students. To ensure the well-being and academic integrity of our community, a Record of Good Conduct is a prerequisite for admission. This helps us ensure that all incoming students align with our values and standards, promoting a harmonious campus culture.

Transfer Student

Transfer students are welcome to apply to ACSOM.

  • A transfer student is anyone currently enrolled at a medical school, or graduated from a medical school wishing to transfer to our program.
  • The transfer admissions process is competitive and subject to space availability.
  • Transfer students must meet all of the documentation requirements of a new applicant.
  • Students who wish to transfer for the first year must apply as new students for the first year of study. Official and current transcript(s) from medical school(s) attended must be provided, in addition to a Dean’s Letter and USMLE Step 1 or MCCQE Step 1 scores (if applicable).
  • Students wishing to transfer directly to the Clinical Rotation program will need to have passed the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE) Step 1 or the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) from the first attempt.

ACSOM will work directly with the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica to facilitate your student visa.

Mason Philpot

Director of Admissions

Mason brings over 16 years of experience in education, having recruited and advised thousands of students. As the Director of Admissions at ACSOM, he is passionate about helping medical students become the next generation of physicians.

Before joining ACSOM, Mason worked on various international medical education programs. Notably, he helped establish a nationally recognized program in collaboration with the Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia, which brought together an international team of experts to deliver critical care training throughout the country.

Mason also served at Houston Community College, where he advised and recruited students from over 140 countries. His efforts played a key role in HCC achieving the largest number of international students for any college in the U.S.

Christine Di Rosa

Enrollment Coordinator

Christine is a highly experienced and dedicated higher education professional committed to helping students achieve their academic goals. Having worked extensively in student life, recruitment, and admissions at prominent Canadian institutions like Wilfrid Laurier University, Trent University, and Dalhousie University, she understands the unique challenges and opportunities facing prospective students. Christine is dedicated to providing personalized support and guidance to help students through the enrolment process. She holds a Masters in Education from Memorial University of Newfoundland, where her research focused on adult learners and student retention. Christine is excited to apply her experience and skills to support Canadian students in realizing their aspirations of becoming physicians.

Sandra Banner

Director of Canadian Operations

Prior to her current role Sandra served as Director of Admissions in Canada for Saint George’s University, where she served as Director of Admissions and Liaison to Governments and Canadian medical organizations, Sandra was Executive Director and CEO of the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) for nearly 30 years during which time she made it her goal to participate in and understand all aspects of medical education in Canada.

During her tenure as CEO of CaRMS, Sandra was a member of several critical medical education committees in Canada including, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) committee on accreditation for 25 years, the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC committee on accreditation for 25 years , and the RCPSC Committee on Specialties for 10 years. and an inaugural public member of the CFPC committee on Family Medicine Specialty or 6 years.  One of the highlights during her time at CaRMS was her role as primary researcher and author of the 2010 Health Canada Report on Canadians Studying Abroad.

After 29 years of leadership of CaRMS, in recognition of her dedication excellence in Medical Education, the Board of Directors established the Sandra Banner Student Award for Leadership (SBSAL) which is awarded annually to a student and a resident.  In addition to this, Sandra received an Honorary Membership from the College of Family Physicians of Canada highlighting her outstanding contribution to the discipline of Family Medicine, the medical profession and health the well-being of Canadians.  Sandra currently resides in Mayo, Quebec where she continues to work with Canadian students seeking a career in medicine and helping them to navigate the journey home for residency and practice in Canada.

Mhicka Ticsay is a dedicated Student Guide with a strong background in customer relations, administrative support, and financial operations. She brings extensive experience in guiding prospective students through the admissions process, ensuring clarity, professionalism, and efficiency at every stage.

Prior to her role in admissions, Mhicka gained valuable expertise in financial services and operations during her time at Philippine National Bank, where she assisted in loan processing, document validation, and client support. Additionally, her experience in customer service and administrative roles across various industries has equipped her with excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

Driven by a commitment to excellence, Mhicka is dedicated to supporting students throughout their academic journey, providing guidance and resources to help them achieve their educational aspirations.
