The American Canadian School of Medicine (ACSOM) and University of Waterloo have partnered to create an exceptional Medical Pathway Program for ambitious undergraduate students aiming for a career in medicine. This unique program provides a streamlined pathway from Waterloo’s Bachelor of Science program to ACSOM’s MD program, enabling students to seamlessly transition from undergraduate studies to medical school.

Undergraduate Years at Waterloo (Years 1-3)

 

  • Students complete the first two years of undergraduate studies in an eligible Waterloo Faculty of Science program:
    • Honours Science
    • Honours Biomedical Sciences
    • Honours Biology
  • In Year 2, eligible students can apply for the Competitive Admissions to Medical School (CAMS) Program and secure ACSOM conditional admission.  Selected students will then receive specialized premed programing to increase their chance of success in the first year of medical school.
  • Selected students will receive specialized pre-med programming to strengthen their medical school applications.
  • Upon completion of Year 3, students are accepted to ACSOM’s MD program.

 

Medical School at ACSOM (Years 4-7)

 

  • Year 4: First year of ACSOM’s medical program – students receive academic credit at both ACSOM and Waterloo.
  • Students completing Year 4 successfully will earn their Bachelor of Science degree from Waterloo.
  • Years 5-7: Medical training continues at ACSOM, culminating in the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree.

Application Entry Points:

  1. Students who wish to apply to the pathway must apply in their second year at Waterloo using the ACSOM Application. Upon acceptance and submission of seat deposit, the Student Support Services Team will assist you with matriculating to campus.

Program Admissions Criteria:

Waterloo Science Student

Be enrolled in one of the eligible Waterloo science programs and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.7 (80%) in their first two years of undergraduate studies.

Pre-Requisite Courses

Biology (2 semesters, with labs);

General Chemistry (2 semesters);

Organic Chemistry (1 semester);

Algebra or Biostatistics (1 semester);

Physics (1 semester)

Successfully complete an interview with ACSOM.

Fluency
In English

Fluency in English is fundamental to thriving in our academic community. Prospective students are expected to demonstrate a strong command of the English language, ensuring they can actively participate in discussions, comprehend complex texts, and articulate ideas effectively.

Record of Good Conduct

At our university, we prioritize fostering a safe and conducive learning environment for all students. To ensure the well-being and academic integrity of our community, a Record of Good Conduct is a prerequisite for admission. This helps us ensure that all incoming students align with our values and standards, promoting a harmonious campus culture.

We require a history of academic achievement and commitment to succeed in medical school and as a medical doctor.

Exclusive Medical School Seats

 

  • Each year, up to 100 students (50 per intake in July and January) will be selected for conditional admission to ACSOM.
  • Admission to ACSOM remains highly competitive, but this program provides Waterloo students with priority interview and admissions.

 

Tuition, Fees, and Financial Support

 

  • Students will pay tuition and fees directly to the institution they are attending (Waterloo for undergraduate years, ACSOM for medical school years).
  • Scholarships & Financial Aid: ACSOM offers entrance awards, scholarships, and bursaries to eligible students.
  • Students are responsible for their own travel, accommodation, health insurance, and personal expenses.
